I opened the Double Lovin’ Ice Cream & Bakery at 1:54 PM, April 17, 2009. It has been a fun and fascinating adventure.
I moved to Hastings in 2007, into a charming cottage on a lake. I have relatives who’ve lived here for many years. Soon after I moved here, I fell in love with the place: the bustling downtown area, friendly people, the stately architecture of the Barry County Courthouse, the vibrant shops, the rolling hills, the Thornapple River and all the beautiful lakes. It’s a place Norman Rockwell would have loved to paint.
As far back as I can recall, I’ve always baked; cakes, fudge, all sorts of cookies, cinnamon rolls and breads. I developed special (secret) recipes that friends and family went crazy over. People were always hiring me to bake birthday cakes, anniversary cakes, wedding cakes and all sorts of baked goods. I did my baking in my own kitchen, but once I moved to Hastings, baking in the small cottage kitchen became a challenge.
So I decided to open a bakery. I looked around downtown Hastings and saw a space available across the street from the Waldorf, next door to the State Grounds Coffee House. It was just perfect!
I was going to call the shop The Double Oven. But then a twist of fate happened. I went to Lake Odessa to visit another bakery and while I was there I happened to stop into an ice cream shop called the Whistle Stop. The owner, Larry Weatherwax was so excited and enthusiastic about ice cream. He told me there was a big ice cream trade show in Lansing that weekend and encouraged me to go — so I went.
The first thing I noticed was everyone at the ice cream show had the same enthusiasm that Larry has. “The ice cream business is a happy business,” one woman said to me. “Everyone loves ice cream, it puts everyone in a better mood.”
So I sampled a lot of different brands, (too many, I got a tummy ache!). I liked a lot of them, but when I sampled Hersheys® Ice Cream, I knew I’d found the best, it was strikingly better. It’s made with all natural ingredients, pure vanilla, fresh cream, fresh hand-picked fruits, it’s just amazing. Hersheys® is a family business (no relation to the chocolate company) that has been making ice cream the same way, with the same recipes, since 1894.
I would soon be opening an ice cream and bakery called the Double Oven? Obviously the name would have to change. But then it occurred to me, if you love great baking and ice cream, (who doesn’t?) then you’ve got two delicious treats to love — it’s Double Lovin’!
The name of the shop was a double entendre just waiting to happen!
So that’s the short version of how I started the Double Lovin’ Ice Cream & Bakery. Stop in and see me (I’m here seven days a week). I look forward to meeting you.
